The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 with a false promise of securing employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

The arrest followed a complaint filed by the victim, Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, who reported that the suspect had collected money from her after claiming he had the influence to facilitate employment opportunities at the teaching hospital.

How the Alleged Fraud Happened

According to the police, the suspect allegedly introduced himself as a qualified medical doctor and convinced the victim that he could secure jobs for her children at UCTH.

Believing the offer was genuine, Mrs. Samuel reportedly paid ₦500,000, expecting the promised employment to materialize. However, after waiting without receiving any appointment or credible update, she realized she had allegedly been deceived and reported the matter to the authorities.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Acting on the complaint, officers attached to the Uwanse Police Division in Calabar South launched an investigation that led to the suspect's arrest.

Police said preliminary investigations resulted in the recovery of exhibits believed to be connected to the alleged offences. The suspect remains in police custody while detectives continue their investigation.

Authorities are also working to determine whether the suspect has been involved in similar cases or if there are other victims who may have fallen prey to the alleged scheme.

Alleged Offences

Police said the suspect is being investigated for several offences, including:

  • Impersonating a medical doctor.

  • Obtaining money by false pretence.

  • Allegedly operating or using medical equipment associated with an illegal mobile clinic.

The Cross River State Police Command noted that the investigation is ongoing and that the suspect will be charged in court if sufficient evidence is established.

Commissioner Orders Comprehensive Investigation

The Commissioner of Police has directed investigators to carry out a thorough investigation into the case to establish the full extent of the alleged criminal activities.

Investigators are expected to determine whether the suspect acted alone, identify any possible accomplices, and uncover whether additional victims were defrauded using similar methods.

Public Advisory

The incident serves as another reminder for members of the public to exercise caution when seeking employment opportunities.

Law enforcement agencies advise job seekers and parents to verify recruitment information through official channels and avoid paying money to individuals who claim they can guarantee employment in government institutions or private organizations. Genuine recruitment processes are typically transparent and do not require unofficial payments to secure appointments.

As investigations continue, the police have encouraged anyone who may have had similar dealings with the suspect to come forward with relevant information that could assist in the case.
